Friend NAT (Network address translation ) is a technique to use limited Public IP addresses to provide internet access to your Network .
To explain I need to let you know about IP address …
IP Address:- is unique 32 bits number which identifies a particular Host and its Network.
There are two types of IP address , Private IP address and Public IP address .
Private IP address :- is the Range of IP addresses which can only be used for Private Networks .. or you can say the networks with in organization … can't be used on Internet. The Private IP address Range is
10.0.0.0 ……… 10.255.255.255
172.16.0.0 ……. 172.31.255.255
192.168.0.0 ……192.168.255.255
About 99.9% of private Networks use private IP address … you can check out the Ip addresses of all the computers in your College or University Lab they will certainly have IP addresses in the this Range .
Public IP Address :- These are the addresses used on internet and don't come free , one has to by the Public IP address … these IPs are pretty expensive .
Now this is the time to come to your question that what is NAT ???
Suppose you Run an ISP and have 100 subscribers . now you have to provide internet access to your 100 subscribers . there are two ways
1 ) By Public IP Address for each subscriber . but you know single public IP may cost you more than hundreds of dollars and the monthly fee you charge your customer is not more than 25 to 30 Dollars … means its not economically feasible .
2) 2nd method is you assign all your customers private IPs which are free and buy couple of Public IPs and share these ips among private IPs requesting internet … its not necessary 100 customer are browsing internet at the same time … May be 70 or 80 are browsing then you can share your one aor two Publich Ips among them , and in case all the customers are browsing even then u can share same Public Ip among all the customers , internet speed may slow down due to sharing a little number of Public Ips among large number of Private Ips but its fine and cost effective … all the ISPs DO this Behind the scene and NAT is used for this purpose.
Now the NAT (Network Address Translation ) Allows to share Small number of Public Ips among large number of Private Ips .
Let 20 Customers are browsing and you have just 2 public Ips then NAT shall assign Publich IPs to these 20 Customers Turn by turn . this is known as Network address Translation (NAT) .

NETWORK ADDRESS TRANSLATION
(NAT)
NETWORK ADDRESS TRANSLATION:
It is the extension of original addressing scheme and was motivated by exhaustion
of IP address space. It allows multiple computers to share a single address. It requires
device to perform packet translation.
Its implementations are available e.g.,
• Stand-alone hardware device
• IP router with NAT functionality embedded
NAT DETAILS:
Site that consists of more than one computer, obtains a single valid IP address. It
assigns a private address to each computer and uses NAT box to connect to the Internet.
NAT translates address in IP datagrams.
ILLUSTRATION OF NAT:
The figure illustrates the NAT functionality. When a computer in the site
communicates to the internet, the NAT device, as shown in the figure below, translates its
private address in the site to the global IP address and vice versa.
NAT EXAMPLE:
For example, a site uses private network 10.0.0.0/8 internally.
First computer is assigned 10.0.0.1, second computer is assigned 10.0.0.2 and so on…
Site obtains a valid IP address (e.g. 128.210.24.6). Let’s assume that the
computer 10.0.0.1 sends to 128.211.134.4 (another global IP address). NAT translates the
IP source address of the outgoing datagram to the global IP address. NAT also translates
the destination address of incoming datagram to the private site address.
