Cross cable ke liye bohat hi simple sa rule ... 1:3 and 2:6 ... means 1st cable doosri taraf 2nd par tau 3rd cable doosri taraf 6th location par.

Dear nido77, yes you are right..........but with this rule, you also need colour code scheme. like if you say that blue is 1 and green is 3 for you may be somebody else say that green and white is 1 for him.............
so for that reason you have to stick with TIA/EIA 568A and 568B standard.

the answer of your question is as follow: Pin 1& 3 are using for sending the data and Pin 3&6 are using for receiving the data (that is reason why, we call FULL DUPLEX, sending and receiving data at the same time).

While Pin 4 is for DC (Direct Current) and Pin 7 is use for GRD (Grounding). This is used in 802.3af (Power over Ethernet) and used when we want to place wireless AP on the top of the roof or outdoor, where power outlet is not available or difficult to run, we provide the power through Ethernet....but very expensive technique.

Pin 5 and 8 are not used.........but they are used for some special purpose.

based on the understanding,,,that i got from your question....these are the answer:

1) yes, we can change the colour scheme of the cabling in straight cable......but why we don't do it? Because in professional environment we follow the standard, otherwise every network engineer/administrator create his/her own colour code.

2) now a days, you can connect 2 Pcs with straight cable....because before communication, they send packets and if they realized that the other end have the same device like it,,,,it change the sending and receive pins.....
but it is advisable to not use......
The main purpose of using cross cable is to connect the switches because they are not such intelligent devices like computers and routers (even router is less intelligent than computer).
Last but not least! its not microsoft who created these standards....its EIA/TIA (a sub-domain of IEEE) who created these standards.
