Toshiba Starts Sampling 64GB SDXC Memory Cards for Commercial Market

Previously we mentioned about the Toshiba announcement of its first 64GB SDXC memory card, now seems that the new Secure Digital eXtended Capacity format cards are already starting to ship and reach major OEMs for initial sampling stage. Topped at capacity of 64GB, it allows an expandable storage capacity on portable devices especially useful for storing full HD (High Definition) multimedia files as a replacement for existing SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) cards.

The new SDXC card is compliant with SD 3.0 version and is capable to read and write at 60MBps and 35MBps respectively. In order to ease up the migration effort, the SDXC cards from Toshiba have been enhanced with UHS104 (Ultra High Speed 104) that allows a much higher read and write speeds maximum at 104MBps. Although it is still too far from theoretically value of 300MBps transmission rate (that can only be achieved when transitioning to SD 4.0 specification) with maximum capacity of 2TB, but this is at least good enough for current usage and good thing is, it will be fully backward compatible with existing SDHC and SD/MMC formats.

No pricing availability yet, the new SDXC cards will be commercialized by early next year in 16GB, 32GB and up to 64GB maximum memory capacity.
