Default Hard drive causing problems....need suggestions

Ok, my hard drive is causing lags and problems....well it slows down the XP as well. I think the Fartition is somehow damaged or problematic because if I go ahead to copy anything on my F: drive or from my F: drive sometimes my system automatically restarts with pop-up at startup that there is no primary hard drive detected!!!! then it comes live after 2-3 attempts.....
    SECONDLY,
I run following command "chkdsk f: /f /r" for scanning of harddrive (multiple times)... it starts verifying files initially but when it shows 1% or 2% complete, the scanning stucks there, then system automatically restarts and show up same error that "Primary drive not found press F1 key to continue"

I don't know whats going wrong here, could any software fix my hard disk issue?

    Many Thanks!
