Well these are not fake. They really do offer free domain names and hosting. The benefits they get are:

1- As they offer free services they get lots of users visiting their web sites. As their web site generate lots of traffic, which attract Advertisers to advertise on their web site.

Example: What do you think, why Hotmail and Yahoo offer free email accounts to world wide users, when managing secure email servers is quite costly?
The answer is only because of Advertisement they get. They make millions of dollars just in a week.

2- Another benefit of giving free domain and hosting is, after you upload your web site to their server they start displaying their promotional banners to your web site. Which in return increase inbond links to their web site and helps to be on top in search engines.
