Dear first i want to ask that when you installed windows xp, how much time for installation it took?,
then a solution for you is that un plug your ram and clean it's points with soft eraser, hard disk (ide/sata) cables, just kept your system barely in open sun light and assemble your components again with firm attached data or power cables, install windows xp professional sp2, but first delete your all partions at first boot time create new partitions.
Remember don't upgrade old windows in such problem.................
Install ccleaner software, and always monitor for startup programs, there should be non but jus an antivirus software.

Asalam o Alaikum,
expert mere computer k sath yeh problem hai k jab main ose start kerta hoon to wo windows logo k bad agay nahi jata, or ager jata bhi hai to bohat hi slow(first black screen or k bad windows start up or os k bad well come her option pr 10-15 min lay leta hai).laikin ager main osy safe mode per start keron to foran start ho jata hai.maine new insatallation ker k daikh le yahi problem hai....... (i am using window xp)

jab installation k bad main audio driver install kerta hoon to system hange ho jata hai (audio driver ki installaion kerte hue) or phir sy yahi prolem start ker data hai. hai, or ager main esy safe Mode main start kr kr ky audio driver ko romove ker doon to theek chane lag jata hai...........(video or lane drive bilkul theek install ho rahe hain..........
