Back up your programs, system settings, and files

You can create a system image, which contains a copy of Windows and copies of your programs, system settings, and files. The system image is then stored in a separate location from the original programs, settings, and files. You can use this image to restore the contents of your computer if your hard disk or entire computer ever stops working.

If you're using Windows Backup to back up your files, you can have a system image created each time your files are backed up. By default, this system image will only include the drives required for Windows to run. To include additional drives in the system image or to create a system image manually, follow the steps below. For information about system images, see What is a system image?

    Note
To create a system image of a drive, it must be formatted to use the NTFS file system. The drive that you're saving the backup on must also be formatted to use the NTFS file system. For more information about NTFS, see Convert a hard disk or partition to NTFS format.

Click to open Backup and Restore.

In the left pane, click Create a system image, and then follow the steps in the wizard. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Keeping different versions of system images
If you're saving your system images on an internal or external drive, or on CDs or DVDs, you can keep several versions of system images. On internal and external hard drives, older system images will be deleted when the drive runs out of space. To help conserve disk space, you can manually delete older system images. For more information, see What backup settings should I use to maximize my disk space?

If you're saving your system images in a network location, you can only keep the most current system image for each computer. System images are saved in the format of drive\WindowsImageBackup\computer name\. If you have an existing system image for a computer and are creating a new one for the same computer, the new system image will overwrite the existing one. If you want to keep the existing system image, you can copy it to a different location before creating the new system image by following these steps:

Navigate to the location of the system image.

Copy the WindowsImageBackup folder to a new location.
    ---------------------
    Back up your files

To help ensure that you don't lose your files, you should back them up regularly. You can set up automatic backups or manually back up your files at any time.

Click to open Backup and Restore.

    Do one of the following:

If you have never used Windows Backup before, click Set up backup, and then follow the steps in the wizard. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

If you have created a backup before, you can wait for your regularly scheduled backup to occur, or you can manually create a new backup by clicking Back up now. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

    Notes
We recommend that you don't back up your files to the same hard disk that Windows is installed on.

Always store media used for backups (external hard disks, DVDs, or CDs) in a secure place to prevent unauthorized people from having access to your files; we recommend a fireproof location separate from your computer. You might also consider encrypting the data on your backup.

To create a new, full backup
After you create your first backup, Windows Backup will add new or changed information to your subsequent backups. If you're saving your backups on a hard drive or network location, Windows Backup will create a new, full backup for you automatically when needed. If you're saving your backups on CDs or DVDs and can't find an existing backup disc, or if you want to create a new backup of all of the files on your computer, you can create a full backup. Here's how to create a full backup:

Click to open Backup and Restore.

In the left pane, click Create new, full backup.

    Note
You will only see this option if your backup is being saved on CDs or DVDs.

To set up backup after upgrading from a previous version of Windows
After you upgrade Windows, you will need to set up Windows Backup, even if you had a scheduled backup in the previous version of Windows. This is because there are several changes to the backup program. Instead of selecting file types to back up, you can have Windows back up data files saved in libraries, on the desktop, and in default Windows folders, or you can choose specific libraries and folders to be backed up. You can also create a system image of your computer. For more information, see How does Windows choose which files to back up?

To set up your backup, follow these steps:

Click to open Backup and Restore.

Click Set up backup, and then follow the steps in the wizard. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
    --------------------------
Restore your computer from a system image backup

You can use a system image to restore the contents of your computer if your hard disk or entire computer ever stops working. For more information about system images, see What is a system image?

    Warning
When you restore your computer from a system image, it's a complete restoration. You can't choose individual items to restore, and all of your programs, system settings, and files are replaced with those on the system image.

Before starting, make sure that the removable media that your backup is stored on is available, if applicable.

To restore using the Recovery Control Panel (recommended)
If your computer is still working and you can access Control Panel, or if you want to restore your system image backup onto a different computer, follow these steps:

    Click to open Recovery.

    Click Advanced recovery methods.

Click Use a system image you created earlier to recover your computer, and then follow the steps.

To restore using pre-installed recovery options
If you can't access Control Panel and you don't have a Windows installation disc or a system repair disc, use this method to restore your computer.

Restart your computer using the computer's power button.

    Do one of the following:

If your computer has only one operating system installed, hold down the F8 key as your computer restarts. You need to press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, try again.

If your computer has more than one operating system installed, use the arrow keys to highlight the operating system that you want to start, and then press F8.

On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight Repair your computer, and then press Enter.

Select a keyboard layout, and then click Next.

Select a user name, type the password, and then click OK.

On the System Recovery Options menu, click System Image Recovery, and then follow the instructions.

To restore using a Windows installation disc or a system repair disc
If you can't access Control Panel, you can restore your computer using a Windows installation disc or a system repair disc (if you have one).

Insert the installation disc or system repair disc.

Restart your computer using the computer's power button.

If prompted, press any key to start the computer from the installation disc or system repair disc.

If your computer is not configured to start from a CD or DVD, check the information that came with your computer. You might need to change your computer's BIOS settings. For information about which settings to change, check your computer manufacturer's website. For more information BIOS, see BIOS: frequently asked questions.

Choose your language settings, and then click Next.

    Click Repair your computer.

This step only applies if you are using a Windows installation disc.

Select a recovery option, and then click Next.
