October 14, 2005 - It should be known by now that I've been a fan of the Age games from way back. There's just something about the historical nature of the games that appeals to me. To be fair, I think elves and space marines are neat too, but I think it's more exciting to explore the what ifs of real, historical situations. Though not quite as faithful to "reality" as some strategy games, the first two Age games offered us exciting sojourns into the worlds of "capital A" Ancient and Medieval strategy. The third title, Age of Mythology, proved that the mechanics were just as solid even if the historical inspiration was a little loose. Now Ensemble is back on the history train with the third official Age of Empires game. Age of Empires III moves the action to the New World, letting players lead a variety of European nations from the Age of Discovery through the Industrial Age. Eight playable nations battle across a wide variety of geographies -- from the swamps of Florida to the snowy passes of the Rocky Mountains. Players can recruit different Native American tribes and seize control of various trade routes. Material and technological support will be offered by the player's home city back in Europe.

The 24-mission campaign is very well designed. Divided into three large acts, it tells the story of three generations of the Black family. First Morgan Black, a Knight of St. John races to the New World to stop the Spanish from seizing a powerful natural wonder. Next, Morgan's grandson John and his Native American allies find themselves in the Seven Year's War. The final act shows John's granddaughter Amelia as the head of a railroad company making their way west.
I won't spoil the particulars of the story here but a common quest and a common enemy unite all three acts. The connections aren't always clear at first, but the associations start to build as the game goes on. Putting the pieces together isn't terribly hard but it gives a nice sense of purpose to the whole game and keeps you invested in the action.
While we're talking about the game's story, it's refreshing to see a game that covers this era of warfare without referencing either Napoleon or the American Revolution. While both are fertile ground for strategy game developers, it's nice to get something a little different this time around. Meeting Washington and Bolivar and taking part in the Seven Year's War adds a little authenticity as well as variety. On the other hand, some of the choices -- like finding Russians in Colorado -- may leave gamers scratching their heads in wonder.
The range of missions is pretty broad. There are plenty of defense missions where you have to protect a given structure or a whole town from enemy assault. In other cases you'll have to destroy or capture key structures. Along the way there are plenty of other objectives: rescuing captured settlers, seizing trading posts, liberating Native American settlements and a whole host of other tasks. Better still, many missions combine a variety of these objectives at once. While most of the missions let you build a base and start collecting resources, there are some missions where you have to make do with a set number of troops.

    HOW TO INSTALL:
    Just unrar and run setup.bat

It's interesting to see how Assassin's Creed, released last November on Xbox 360 and PS3, saw great success despite lukewarm reviews. Much like with Eidos' Kane & Lynch, an interesting presentation and a good amount of marketing overcame ho-hum responses from critics to make it a successful title with over a million copies sold. And now, Ubisoft is delivering Creed on the PC with a few new features that have been put together to address one of the biggest concerns about the game. But are the tough system requirements going to make this title worth it for a majority of gamers?
Assassin's Creed tells a unique story of a young man in the modern day, kidnapped by some high-tech group and forced to relive the "genetic memories" of his ancestor, Altair, a professional killer in the Middle East during the Crusades. You spend almost all of your time as Altair as his impressive story unfolds, and you'll get to explore huge medieval cities, investigate your targets, and take them out with your deadly wrist-drawn blade. As you get nearer to the end of the game you figure out who these people are and what they want with the memories of a long-dead killer. Ories of a long-dead killer.

The holes in game design start to become apparent in the next hour or so, however. Altair is assigned to kill nine major public figures, all of whom allegedly disrupt the peace and may also be contributing to the Crusaders' increasing foothold in the realm. Before he can take out a target, though, he must choose from several activities that give him info on how the kill will go down. You can pickpocket key info from someone close to your mark, interrogate someone to extract intelligence, or sit in a key place to eavesdrop on an incriminating a conversation. It doesn't matter which investigation tactics you choose, as your subsequent approach on the target is always the same, and once you've done 3 investigation missions then you're thrown into the mission to do the deed. Some have complained about not being able to finish all of the investigation missions, but I find them to be the worst parts of the game - I didn't mind having them closed off once I finished three.

    BULLY SCHOLARSHIP EDITION:

    PC REQUIREMENT:
    Minimum System Requirements
    OS: Windows XP/Vista
Processor: Pentium 4 @ 3 GHz or Athlon Equivalent
    Memory: 1 GB
    Hard Drive: 4.7 GB Free
Video Memory: nVidia GeForce 6600/7300 or ATI Radeon X1300 (Shader Model 3.0)
    Sound Card: DirectX Compatible
    DirectX: 9.0c
    Keyboard & Mouse
    DVD Rom Drive

PC game enthusiasts know they're in trouble when a game's menus require keyboard input rather than allow you a mouse pointer. That's the first indication, but hardly the last, that this version of Rockstar Games' boisterous look at schoolyard folly is just a quick cash-in. There seems to be little regard for the platform here: The game suffers from numerous bugs and glitches, the keyboard and mouse controls are awkward, and for a game that hardly pushes the capabilities of a halfway decent computer, it performs poorly. It's too bad, because at heart, Bully is one of the better gameplay experiences in recent years, letting you break a drunken schoolteacher out of an asylum, help the lunch lady drug her date, steal panties from the girls' dorm, and take pictures of snotty kids sitting on the lap of a homeless Santa. But with little in the way of meaningful additions and all sorts of platform-specific problems, Bully on the PC just feels rushed.

    Battlestations Pacific :

    PC REQUIREMENT:

Core 2 Duo 3 GHz, 2 GB RAM, graphic card 256 MB (GeForce 6800 or better), 8 GB HDD, Windows XP/Vista.

    Description

BattleStations: Pacific is the immense sequel to the critically acclaimed Battlestations: Midway. The innovative franchise returns to complete the entire Pacific War with two massive single-player campaigns, the historically based US campaign and a historically possible Japanese campaign.
Players will experience one war through two epic sagas to be a part of history or change it. Commanding the US Fleet, players relive the grandest and most critical naval battles of the Pacific War and for the first time, as the Japanese, players lead the IJN Fleet to a completely different ending to the war.
No other game delivers the challenge of an RTS with the rush of real-time WWII flight and naval warfare. Players need intelligence and expertise to plan their moves in order to remain one step ahead of the opponent. The players command both strategy and action to anticipate every opponent move and turn the tide of war.
Twice the size of the original, the sequel includes 28 major battles, 100 units including 21 new units, five new innovative multi-player modes across eight new multi-player maps, and new features which include island capture, kamikaze attacks, and an improved easy-to-use interface.

    Features

Combined Real-Time Strategy, Flight, and Naval Action gameplay: Command the air, sea, and sub forces. Launch full-scale attacks and at anytime switch to and take full-control of any plane, ship or sub. You command, fly the attack, fire the battleship’s 15-inch guns, and submerge the mini-sub anyway you choose throughout the battle.
Two Massive Campaigns: 28 full-scale battles across two unique campaigns. The historic American campaign begins after Midway and goes to Guadalcanal, Leyte, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and more. The “what if” Japanese campaign begins at Pearl Harbor and goes to the Java Sea, Port Moresby, Midway, and beyond.
100 War Machines: Fighters, bombers, carriers, battleships, cruisers, destroyers, subs, mini subs and more. 17 US planes including the new Corsair fighters and Curtis Helldivers, and 20 Japanese planes including the Mitsubishi J2M Raiden (Thunderbolt), and the night-fighting Nakajima J1N1 Gekko.
Innovative Online Multi-player Battles: Huge multi-unit battles for up to eight players (four on each side) on Xbox Live and Games for Windows Live. The largest battle involves over 100 units. And five all-new online gameplay modes: Island capture, Duel, Siege, Escort, and Competitive

February 3, 2009 - An open world isn't necessarily something you'd expect from a racing game. Yet that's exactly what Eden Games did with Test Drive Unlimited, and it's what Criterion has done with Burnout Paradise. Around the fictional setting of Paradise City cars are meant to be smashed, shortcuts and super jumps discovered, and multiple routes toward the same finish line exploited. Winning challenges nets you new rides and better licenses to take on more difficult challenges, making for an extensive offline component and a much different type of feel for a game like this. While some issues inherent in any open world are present in Paradise City, the overall experience provides for some great entertainment, particularly for the sector of the PC crowd who has yet to try a Burnout title.

Paradise made its first appearance on Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3 in January of 2008, and since then, the games have been expanded with several downloadable packs. All the content so far, including a day / night cycle in the world, a collection of bikes, and additional online challenges, is built into the Ultimate Box version for the PC. There's also an option to restart events in the game, meaning you don't have to drive all the way back to the starting area if you want to try one again like was the case with the original release, which certainly makes things more convenient.
The city itself isn't a metropolis teeming with life--you won't see pedestrians wandering around or anything like that--but there's plenty of traffic on the roads and shortcuts to discover as you freely drive around. While in the confines of your car you can pull up at stoplights to trigger events of different types, like stunt challenges, races, marked man (reach a finish line while other drivers try to smash you to bits) and road rage (destroy a set number of cars within a time limit) events, as well as timed runs. The cars that eventually become available fall into the categories of speed, stunt, and aggressive types, and all have their own specific statistics and styles of handling that make unlocking and testing them all out worthwhile.

One of the franchise's trademarks is the boosting system, a meter that builds as you drive dangerously, which works differently across the three types of cars. For instance, speed type cars can only trigger boost once the meter is full, aggressive cars can extend their meters by taking down opponents, and stunt cars earn more by doing tricks. With each car type, the boost provides a sensational acceleration that propels you forward at ridiculous rates. Criterion does an excellent job here of conveying a sense of speed to the player as the environment zips by, and with some practice you'll be able to keep things under control for the most part thanks to the system's overall responsiveness and solid feel. Whenever you do lose control and crash into a guardrail, passing traffic, or other racer, you're treated to a slow-motion scene of intricate vehicular destruction. While you may be cursing because the crash cost you time, broke a stunt combo, or dropped your race position, the slasher film-like brutality of the wrecks is still fascinating to watch.

What's lost in Paradise City is the feeling of structured challenge you'd get if the events were isolated instead of incorporated into an open world. When racing there's no specific path you need to follow in the game, which certainly has its strengths. If you've spent the time exploring, learning the shortcuts or the best roads to follow, you'll have a much easier time reaching the finish line. It'll be a while before getting to that point, however, since the city is a dense place. Shortcut routes are clearly marked with blinking yellow gates and jumps with bright blue, but where exactly they'll emerge takes some getting used to. It's fairly common to be speeding along and hitting a shortcut you think will easily get you to your destination more quickly, then emerging on the other side going the wrong way or on a road from which it'll take far too long to find your way back, forcing a restart. Once you've learned the ins and outs of the shortcuts this isn't as much of an issue, but in the meantime it's a better idea to stick to the streets.
