KARACHI: Violence erupted in various parts of the city after the assassination of chief of the banned religious outfit Sipah-e Sahaba Pakistan (SSP), Allama Ali Sher Hyderi who was gunned down in Khairpur.
Nagan Chowrangi was the area that was mostly affected and the Rangers surrounded the area, which caused harassment there. The Pakistan Ulema Council has declared three days of mourning.
At least three vehicles were torched while the miscreants also tried to set ablaze two petrol pumps, due to which law enforcers entered the premises of SSP's headquarter Siddiq-e-Akbar Masjid and arrested nine SSP men after one-and-a-half-hour gun-battle and detained its central leader Maulana Ghafoor Nadeem.
It is worth mentioning here that Allama Ali Sher Hyderi, a senior leader of Millat-e-Islamia Pakistan (formerly SSP) was shot dead by unknown culprits at Pir Jo Goth when he was passing through on his way to Khairpur. In the assassination, Allama Hyderi was killed along with driver of the vehicle, Imtiaz Phulpoto, and one other body that is likely of one of the assailants was found from the scene.
Following the SSP leader's assassination, violent protests sparked in various parts of the province including Karachi. In Karachi, unknown persons burnt tyres, pelted stones on passing vehicles and restored to aerial firing in different localities including Nagan Chowrangi, New Karachi, Patel Para, Ibrahim Hyderi, Qayyumabad, Landhi Dawood Chowrangi, Quaidabad, Keamari, Baldia, North Nazimabad, Nazimabad and others.
At Nagan Chowrangi, an angry mob torched two vehicles including a private contract bus and a Suzuki high-roof and a UTS bus near Metro Cinema in Orangi Town.
Heavy contingents of law enforcers including Rangers and police were deputed in the city especially at Nagan Chowrangi. Eyewitnesses said, after the deployment of law enforcers, SSP men came out of the Masjid and resorted to aerial firing to force the shopkeepers to pull the shutters of their shops down.
As a result, the entire area especially surrounding the Nagan Chowrangi locality wore a deserted look. All markets and shopping centres were closed and people preferred to remain indoors, upon which, the law enforcers also resorted to aerial firing, baton-charge and tear-gas.
Then the SSP men went inside the Masjid and took positions from where they opened indiscriminate firing, though in retaliation, personnel of the law enforcement agencies also opened fire and after almost one-and-a-half-hour, crossfire, the law enforcers were able to enter inside the Masjid and detained 10 SSP men including central leader and his four sons.
During the exchange of fire between the law enforcers and gunmen, five persons were wounded. The four passer-bys are Shamim Khatoon, Ahmed Raza, Dhanraj, and Mohammad Faraz while ASI Manzoor of the Sharah-e-Noor Jahan police station who was deputed to the nearest Imambargah was also wounded.
Law enforcers also claimed to have recovered weapons and Jihadi CDs from the premises of the Masjid during search operation. The seized weapons included one 222 rifle, one repeater, one 7mm rifle, six TT pistols and ammunitions.
Soon before the search operation in the Masjid, Maulana Nadeem told the media men that the weapons seized by the law enforcers were licenced, which were kept for security reasons. He said his four sons Mohammad Sohaib, Mohammad Rashid, Mohammad Mavia and Saad Mavia, two Masjid's caretakers Ali and Muslim and a guest Abdul Khaliq were also detained.
Karachi police chief Wasim Ahmed while talking to the Daily Times confirmed the arrest of the SSP men from SSP headquarter Siddiq-e-Akbar Masjid. Police chief said that the law enforcers have taken their positions in the Masjid and a meeting is scheduled for today (Tuesday) with SSP leader Engineer Ilyas Zubair.
