IT administrators struggling with the lack of control in the mobile device market and the increased adoption of mobile business applications will find the new BlackBerry® Enterprise Server 5.0 can help solve many of their mobile administration problems.

BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0 is the latest version of the push-based server software from Research In Motion (RIM). It focuses on business mobility—both for IT administrators and end users. Version 5.0 supports advanced IT administration features and smartphone controls that make mobile workers more productive and more effectively meet the demands of large-scale, mission-critical enterprise deployments.

IT departments can use BlackBerry Enterprise Server as a secure, centrally managed link between their end users' BlackBerry devices and the organization's enterprise systems, applications, and wireless networks. It tightly integrates with the most popular e-mail and personal information management systems like IBM Lotus Domino and Microsoft Exchange, and is designed to provide highly secure access to e-mail, organizer data, instant messaging, Web browser, and other enterprise applications.

When used in conjunction with the BlackBerry® Mobile Voice System, BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0 can also provide access to corporate phone environments, bringing office phone features to BlackBerry smartphones.

BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0 offers a number of security-related features that will help administrators gain control over how the BlackBerry smartphones in their enterprise are being used. Certain applications can be disallowed, prohibiting end users from downloading them to their smartphones.

Alternatively, Over-The-Air application deployment and device software updates can be better managed, distributed, and controlled with BlackBerry Enterprise Server's job scheduling and throttling.

IT policy management is greatly simplified in BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0. In addition to applying IT policies to individuals, IT administrators can create groups of mobile users and nested groups, then apply IT policies or perform IT tasks for one or more groups. Approximately 450 IT policies can be applied to individuals or groups of smartphone users, ranging from enforcing password protection and controlling access to third-party mobile applications, to controlling the use of certain device features, such as using a camera or video recording.

The BlackBerry® Administration Service is a new administration component with a Web-based user interface that provides centralized management, monitoring, and control of mobile device deployments and the complete BlackBerry system environment. IT administrators can easily access the BlackBerry Administration Service from a web browser, then use the console to monitor and administer their BlackBerry deployment.

The server's system health monitoring gives administrators a unified, color-coded view of their BlackBerry environment, both server and user related, and allows for the easy identification of potential issues.
BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0's advanced reporting features include trending, chart analysis, and server statistics, and give administrators a comprehensive view into the overall health of the BlackBerry system environment.

The server also stores up to 56 weeks of health scores for historical trending analysis.

With mobile devices playing such a critical role in business today, BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0 includes features to guard against downtime. Built-in high availability and automated failover allow IT administrators to set BlackBerry Enterprise Server to automatically issue alerts and then failover to a standby server when certain thresholds are met. Load balancing between the primary and standby server is an option for some shared service components like the Attachment Service. Manual failover from the primary server to the standby server is an option for IT administrators to perform planned maintenance tasks without affecting service.

BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0 supports all current BlackBerry smartphones. When used with BlackBerry Device Software 5.0, which is due out later this year, BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0 will allow users remote access to Windows network file shares for secure retrieval, viewing, editing, and e-mailing documents from behind the firewall. End users will also be able to create, move, browse, rename, and delete e-mail folders directly from their device, and view and attach files from those folders to e-mails sent from the smartphone.

Upgrading to BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0 is easy and seamless with the BlackBerry® Enterprise Transporter. It streamlines the transfer of multiple user accounts from one BlackBerry Enterprise Server domain to another without impact to or action required by end users.

With the release of version 5.0, more technical resources and services are available to help administrators deploy and master BlackBerry Enterprise Server. BlackBerry Migration Planning Services, provided by RIM Professional Services, is designed to help organizations plan their upgrade to version 5.0.

BlackBerry Technical Support Services now offers a new tiered program with varying degrees of support to meet the range of customer needs. New services offered include Change Management Planning, Health Check Services, and Direct to Level Two Support Resources.

BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0 can scale with your organization, providing monitoring and management of your BlackBerry environment as the number of smartphones deployed in the enterprise grows. It allows employees to remain productive outside the office, while instituting a level of control mostly missing in the mobile device landscape to this point.
