    Dear All,
Chronic bad breath is something we all worry about from time to time. The causes of bad breath or halitosis are many and there are several possible solutions to this often embarrassing problem. Poor dental hygiene, throat infections and a post nasal drip from chronic allergies can all leave your breath with a bad odor. Your mouth, gums, tongue and infected teeth can also play a part in giving you halitosis but there are a few things you can do to get rid of bad breath and prevent it from recurring.
Understanding the causes of bad breath will help you to find an effective remedy and once implemented you are on your way to a mouth that not only looks good but smells good too.
How to Tell If you Have Bad Breath
Over time we get used to our own body odors so you may not even be aware that you have bad breath. Some dentists use a breath monitor called a balimeter to uncover the extent of your bad breath. A balimeter measures the amount of sulfur compounds that exist in your breath. Sulfur compounds give the breath a bad smell so a balimeter will tell you the truth even if your friends won’t!
If you are brave enough to want to test your own breath there are a few tricks that will help you find out if you have a problem:
    1. Run a strand of unflavored white dental floss between your upper and lower back molars. Take a look at the floss. Is it red or brown? Wait about 45 seconds and smell the floss. If it has an objectionable odor, you probably have bad breath.
    2. Hold the tip of your tongue with a clean washcloth and rub the back of your tongue with a clean white washcloth. Again, wait 45 seconds and smell the cloth. If it has an offensive odor, your breath does too.
    3. Lick your clean wrist and then wait 45 seconds. Smell the area. This quick test won’t get back to the dorsum (back of the tongue) where the real trouble might be.
If the tests above reveal a problem you may be wondering what is causing your bad breath. Apart from the obvious causes like the foods we eat (garlic and onions are absorbed into the bloodstream and exhaled through the lungs) and smoking or drinking coffee, several oral and respiratory system problems can contribute to halitosis.
The list below offers some clues to possible sources of bad breath and suggests some general remedies to alleviate the problem.
Bad Breath Caused by a Post Nasal Drip
The dorsum is the area on the back of your tongue and the discharge you see on it is caused by a heavy mucous drip from the back of the nose – often the result of allergic rhinitis (allergies). This discharge doesn’t have an offensive odor until it has been there for a while and starts to be broken down by bacteria.
    What to Do
To get rid of bad breath caused by a post nasal drip gargle with a good mouthwash. Your dentist or oral hygienist will be able to recommend one. Next, you need to clean your tongue thoroughly. Do this by using a tongue scraper (don’t use toothpaste).
It is no longer recommended to use a toothbrush to clean the dorsum as this merely re-infects the area. If you do use one, use it once only and then throw it away. You may find that you gag the first few times you do this but as you persevere this reflex should disappear.
    Bad Breath Caused by Sinusitis
If you suffer from sinusitis or any bacterial infection of the nasal passages or throat, a blockage of your airway or dry nasal passages could be the root of your problem. It may be difficult to tell if the odor stems from mouth or nose but if you breathe out through the nose and the smell is the same as the bad breath you have then the smell is probably coming from your nose.
    What to Do
Contact an ear, nose and throat specialist to determine the cause of the complaint and get it properly treated. Once the problem is cleared up the bad breath should disappear.
Bad Breath Caused by Dry Mouth
Certain medications for example antihistamines or decongestants and stress can contribute to the mouth not producing enough saliva – a condition commonly known as xerostomia or ‘dry mouth’. Insufficient saliva can cause bad breath since it acts a cleanser and lubricator. If your nose is blocked and you breathe through your mouth a lot you may have xerostomia.
    What to Do
If you suffer from dry mouth chew gum to get the salivary glands working again. Take frequent sips of water and hold it in your mouth for a few seconds. Consider changing your medication to one without dry mouth as a side-effect. Make sure to take steps to avoid stress if anxiety is leaving you with bad breath.
Bad Breath Caused by Poor Dental Hygiene
Good oral health is essential if you want to avoid the misery of bad breath. When we eat and drink small food particles get trapped between the teeth and form plaque.
This bacterial build up is a common cause of bad breath since the bacteria react with sulfur-containing proteins in the mouth and release volatile sulfur compounds (gases that smell like rotten eggs!).
    What to Do
Brush your teeth after every meal and before bed. Good brushing techniques are the ones we learned in kindergarten – up and down and in circular movements. This will dislodge the plaque and keep the mouth, teeth and gums healthy.
Floss every day to remove plaque from the spaces between the teeth. Once you experience how great your mouth feels after flossing, you won’t want to stop.
Visit your dentist and have him repair any cavities or remove teeth that are problematic.
If your halitosis is severe you may require a prescription antibacterial rinse, like chlorohexidine gluconate to get rid of the problem. Chlorine dioxide is a germicide that is applied to the tongue to effectively combat halitosis.
These simple measures should get rid of bad breath and leave you feeling more confident. They will also improve your general and oral health. If the problem won’t go away remember that bad breath can also be caused by lung infections, bronchial infections, metabolic disorders, carcinomas or biochemical disorders. These aren’t usually a problem for most people but you should see your doctor if there is no improvement with these basic measures.
