Difference between notebook and laptop

Hi friends, I m asking about what is diff between laptop and notebook?
I have bought HP Pavilion dm4-3090se Notebook with windows 7 activated. Now I am trying to install windows 8 but it doesn't detect hard disk and says that hard disk is locked. I have tried it with windows xp and windows 8 also.
