Error Message:
Generic error. [Your mail account name]. POP3 server unavailable. Network problems?
Translation:
According to Opera Software, you may run into this error message if you use Opera’s email software, which is part of the Opera Internet browser. It means that Opera Mail tried to connect to the email server (so it could retrieve your emails) but couldn’t find an Internet connection. By default, Mail looks for emails every five minutes, which means that if you have dial-up Internet service and use Mail while you are offline (to compose messages, for example), you’ll probably see this message often.
Solution:
According to Opera Software, you can temporarily solve the problem by clicking File at the top of the Opera window and then clicking Work Offline. Your Mail account is now in Offline Mode. You can return it to Online Mode by clicking File and Work Offline again. However, you’ll encounter the error message every time you try to use Mail offline.
If you want to avoid the error message permanently, you’ll need to prevent Mail from automatically checking for (and sending) new messages. To do this, click Tools and Mail And Chat Accounts. When the Manage Accounts window opens, you’ll see the email account(s) that appeared in the error message. Select the account (click it once) and then click the Edit button.
In the Account Properties window, click the Incoming tab and then uncheck the Check For New Messages Every #Minutes box. By unchecking the box, you’re telling Mail not to look for emails unless you click the Check/Send button. If you compose outgoing messages offline but don’t click the Send button until you are online, you don’t need to adjust Mail’s Outgoing properties. Simply click the OK button at the bottom of Account Properties and then click the Close button at the bottom of the Manage Accounts window. You won’t see the error message again, unless the error message listed more than one email account. In that case, you’ll need to repeat the process for each account.
If you sometimes click the Send button while composing a message offline (instead of clicking Save and then closing the message), Mail will try to send the email immediately and will produce the Generic Error message again. To avoid this hassle, re-enter Account Properties window (Click Tools and Mail And Chat Accounts, select the account, and then click Edit) and then click the Outgoing tab. Check the Queue Messages (Do Not Send Immediately) box and then click OK. Click the Close button at the bottom of the Manage Accounts window. Now, Mail won’t automatically send the message when you click its Send button. Instead, Mail will put your email in a queue and won’t send any messages until you connect to the Internet and click the Check/Send button. You can also send the queued emails by clicking Mail, Check/Send, and Send Queued.
